For YouTubers

Captions you checked, not the automatic draft

YouTube makes automatic captions for most uploads, but they can take a while to appear, they can’t be styled, and they slip on names and punctuation just like any speech model. Uploading your own SRT means viewers see captions you have already proofread. For Shorts, captions burned into the picture show up even for people who never tap the CC button.

The quick answer

Long videos: export SRT and upload it in YouTube Studio under Subtitles → Upload file → With timing. Shorts: pick Karaoke or Bold pop and render an MP4.

How to use the YouTube Subtitle Generator

  1. 01

    Drop in your video

Up to 30 minutes per video. Vertical Shorts get short caption lines automatically.

  2. 02

    Fix names and terms

Channel names, product names and jargon are where speech models slip. Click a line to fix it; the video jumps to that moment.

  3. 03

    Export for YouTube

SRT for regular uploads, or a burned-in MP4 for Shorts.

  4. 04

    Upload the SRT in Studio

In YouTube Studio open Subtitles, pick the video and language, then Upload file and choose With timing.

FAQ

YouTube Subtitle Generator FAQ

01

Why upload an SRT if YouTube already makes captions?

YouTube’s automatic captions are a machine draft that you would still need to review in YouTube Studio. Making the file here lets you fix names and wording before anything is published, and you keep a copy of the file for other platforms.
02

Should Shorts have burned-in captions?

Many people watch Shorts with the sound off and never open the caption menu, so captions that are part of the picture are the safer choice for short clips.
03

Which file should I pick for YouTube, SRT or VTT?

Either works. YouTube accepts both. SRT is the most common and is what most guides assume, so start there.
04

Can I caption a video in another language?

Yes. Whisper handles 50+ languages. Captions come out in the spoken language; there is no translation yet, so for a second language you would need a translated file from elsewhere.
05

Does it cost anything?

No. Each visitor can transcribe 20 minutes of video a day. Editing, SRT downloads and rendering in your browser are unlimited.
