Auto Captions is built so your video stays on your device unless you choose otherwise. This page explains exactly what leaves your browser, when, and why.

Your video

Videos are opened, previewed and edited inside your browser. When you render on your device (the default), the captioned file is created on your computer and we never receive the video.

If you choose Render in the cloud, your browser uploads the video and your captions to our storage (Cloudflare R2) so our render server can create the captioned MP4. The uploaded video is deleted as soon as the render finishes, and in any case within 1 day. The finished video is kept for 7 days so you can download it, then deleted. Only you can download it, from the browser that started the render.

Audio sent for transcription

To create captions, your browser extracts a compressed, mono audio track and sends it to our server, which forwards it to our speech-recognition provider, Groq, and returns the transcript. We do not store the audio or the transcript. Groq processes the audio under its own privacy policy.

Credits and usage limits

To keep the tool free, each visitor gets 20 credits a day (1 credit = 1 minute of video captioned or rendered in the cloud). To count them we store, per task: a random visitor ID from a cookie, a one-way salted hash of your IP address (not the IP itself), the amount of credits, the video length and size, and the time. These records are used only for limits, refunds and abuse prevention, and are never sold or shared.

Signing in with Google (optional)

You can use Auto Captions without an account. If you choose to sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, profile picture link and Google account ID, and store them to recognize your account and give it 60 daily credits. We don’t get your Google password and don’t access anything else in your Google account. Sign-in is kept by a session cookie (ac_session) for up to 30 days. You can sign out any time, or delete your account from the account menu, which removes your account data and sessions immediately.

Cookies and storage

We set one functional cookie, ac_id, which holds a random visitor ID so your daily credits can be counted. It contains no personal information. If you sign in, a second functional cookie, ac_session, keeps you signed in. Your editor settings (caption style) are saved in your browser’s local storage, and your captions exist only in your open tab until you download them. Apart from the advertising cookies described below, we don’t use tracking cookies.

Advertising

To keep Auto Captions free, we use Google AdSense to show ads on our articles and pages. Ads never appear inside the editor, and they have no access to your video, audio or captions.

Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and other sites on the internet. You can opt out of personalized advertising in Google’s Ads Settings, and opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalized advertising at aboutads.info. Google explains how it uses information from sites that show its ads in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.

Visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland are asked for consent before any advertising cookies are set, and can change that choice at any time from the privacy message on the site.
