A free Kapwing alternative for auto subtitles

By the Auto Captions team · Published

Short answer

If you work alone and only need captions, yes: our tool is free all the way through, with no watermark, no account and videos up to 30 minutes. Kapwing's free plan (at the time of writing, October 2026) watermarks every export, caps it at 720p and 4 minutes, and includes 10 minutes of auto-subtitling. If other people edit your videos with you, Kapwing's shared workspace is worth keeping.

Kapwing is built for teams. Commenting, link sharing, inviting members and real-time editing are on every plan, Free included, and subtitles are one tool inside that workspace. We built the opposite: one person, one video, and nobody to invite.

Who should stay with Kapwing, and who should switch

Stay with Kapwing if other people touch your videos. An agency cutting social clips for clients gets real value from comments on the video and a shared project, and paid plans add a brand kit and custom fonts. For that kind of team, captions are a bonus.

Switch if you work alone and the free plan keeps getting in the way. The limits add up: a watermark on every export, 720p only, a 4-minute cap on export length, 30 minutes of exports a month, and projects that stay in storage for 3 days. A 6-minute interview clip can't be exported from Kapwing's free plan at all.

What Kapwing does better

Teamwork, first. Nothing here replaces a shared project where your client can leave a comment on the exact second they mean. Kapwing is also a full editor with a timeline, stock media, screen recording, Smart Cut for removing silences, a clip maker that pulls shorts out of a long video, B-roll suggestions, voice cloning, and lip sync on paid plans.

Its subtitle tool is deeper too. Kapwing advertises over 100 preset caption styles, detects multiple speakers so each can get their own color and font, and translates subtitles into more than 60 languages. We have four presets, no speaker labels and no translation. If you publish the same interview in English, Spanish and Hindi, Kapwing saves you real time.

Where a Kapwing free alternative helps

Solo work with a hard deadline. You get a finished, unwatermarked video from a free tool, and nobody asks you to sign in first. The video isn't uploaded: your browser sends only a small audio track to Whisper large-v3 turbo for the transcript and renders the MP4 itself. Our VEED comparison goes into that setup in more detail.

The free SRT matters more than it sounds. On Kapwing's free plan the captions stay locked inside the project. Here, the SRT generator hands you the file straight away, so you can upload it to YouTube as closed captions and keep the original video clean.

What you give up is the shared part. There's no project to send a colleague, and nothing is saved between visits. If someone else needs to check the wording, send them the SRT, then drop their corrected file back in with the video.

How to move a video over from Kapwing

If the captions in your Kapwing project are already corrected, keep them:

  1. On a paid Kapwing plan, download the subtitles as an SRT file before your subscription ends.
  2. Open our tool for burning subtitles into video, drop in the original video and the SRT, pick a style and export.

On Kapwing's free plan there's no SRT to take with you, so start fresh. Drop the video on the auto captions page, check the words (names and numbers first), choose a style and export.

Our take

Kapwing's free plan is there to let you try the editor before you pay, and for that it works. It isn't meant for finishing captioned videos, which is why the watermark and the 4-minute cap exist. A team should pay for Kapwing. One person who needs clean captions on a clip this afternoon doesn't need to.

FAQ

Questions, answered

01

Does Kapwing put a watermark on free videos?

Yes. At the time of writing (October 2026), Kapwing's pricing page lists "unlimited exports with a watermark" for the Free plan. Pro and Business remove it.
02

Can I download an SRT from Kapwing for free?

No. Kapwing's plan comparison marks SRT/VTT and transcript downloads as paid features. If you need a subtitle file without paying, you can make one here and download SRT, VTT or TXT.
03

Can I work on captions with a teammate here?

No. There are no accounts or shared projects. One person drops in the video and exports. If two people need to edit the same captions, pass the SRT back and forth, or use Kapwing.
04

What is the longest video I can caption?

30 minutes per file, and 20 minutes of transcription per visitor per day. Kapwing's free plan exports up to 4 minutes, so for anything longer this is the easier free option.
05

Does it translate like Kapwing?

No. Subtitles come out in the spoken language only. Kapwing's translation is a real reason to pay for it if you publish in several languages.
