A free VEED alternative for subtitles

By the Auto Captions team · Published

Short answer

If you only open VEED to add subtitles, this is a good alternative: it's free, needs no account, adds no watermark, and gives you an MP4 with the captions burned in or an SRT file. If you use VEED as a full editor (avatars, dubbing, brand kits, team review), stay with VEED. This is a caption tool, not an editor.

VEED is an online video editor that does a lot: trimming, AI avatars, text to speech, dubbing, screen recording, and subtitles. Our tool does one of those things. That's most of the comparison. The rest of this page is about when it matters.

Who should stay with VEED, and who should switch

Stay with VEED if you edit whole videos there. If your subtitles are one step in a project that also has cuts, B-roll, music and a brand kit, moving the captions somewhere else just adds an export and an import. VEED also translates subtitles (its Pro and Studio plans list 50+ languages), which we don't do at all.

Switch if subtitles are the only reason you open VEED. On the free plan you pay for that convenience with a watermark and a 720p export. Here you drop in the file, check the words, and download. Nothing to log into, nothing to upgrade.

Plenty of people sit in between. They cut the video in CapCut, Premiere or DaVinci Resolve and open VEED only for captions. That group gains the most from switching.

Paid plans include unlimited subtitles under a 50-hour-a-month fair use limit, per the FAQ on VEED's pricing page. The watermark and 720p details come from its help center articles on watermarks and exporting.

What VEED does better

Quite a lot, if you need more than captions. VEED is a timeline editor with a stock media catalog, AI avatars, voice generation, dubbing, an eye-contact fix, background noise removal and a teleprompter. Pro adds multiple brand kits, Studio adds custom templates, and Enterprise adds team management and a review mode.

It also has more caption styles, including animations beyond a single word highlight. We have four presets. Karaoke, Boxed and Bold pop highlight the word being spoken, Classic stays static, and you can change the font, size, colors and position of any of them. That covers most social and YouTube videos. If you want a different animation for every client, VEED has the bigger menu.

What a VEED free alternative does differently

The main difference is where the work happens. With VEED, you upload the whole video and edit a copy in the cloud. Our tool opens the video in your browser, pulls out a small compressed audio track, and sends only that to Whisper large-v3 turbo for transcription. The captioned MP4 is then encoded on your own computer with WebCodecs, so there's no upload to wait for and the video never sits on anyone's server.

The catch is that rendering uses your device, so an old laptop takes longer to export than a new one. And we don't store projects, so finish in one sitting or download the SRT to pick up later.

How to move your subtitle workflow over from VEED

  1. If a VEED project already has corrected captions, download them first. VEED's help article puts this in the Subtitles tab under Options, where Download Subtitles offers SRT, VTT or TXT. Pick SRT. This needs a paid plan.
  2. Export the video itself without subtitles, or use your original file.
  3. Open our burn-in tool and drop in the video and the SRT together. The lines appear with their original timing.
  4. Pick a style, adjust size and position, and export the MP4.

For new videos you don't need VEED at all. Drop the video on the auto captions page, let it transcribe, fix names and numbers, and export. If you only want a subtitle file for YouTube or a course platform, the free subtitle generator opens straight on the export options.

If you liked VEED's karaoke style, our Karaoke preset is the closest match: a yellow box sits behind each word as it's spoken. The guide to word-by-word captions covers line length and placement.

The short version

VEED is an editor with subtitles in it. We're a subtitle tool with nothing else in it. If you'd miss the timeline, the avatars or the translation, keep paying for VEED. If the only thing you'd miss is the watermark, switch.

FAQ

Questions, answered

01

Can I remove the VEED watermark without paying?

Not on VEED itself. Its help center says exports from a free account, or made while logged out, carry a VEED watermark, and only a paid plan removes it. If subtitles are the only reason you export from VEED, you can make the same captioned MP4 here with no watermark.
02

Can I bring subtitles I already made in VEED?

Yes, if you can get them out as an SRT or VTT file. Drop the video and the subtitle file in together, restyle the lines, and export. VEED says subtitle file downloads need a paid plan, so do this before a subscription runs out.
03

Does this tool translate subtitles like VEED Pro?

No. It writes subtitles in the language that's spoken. If you need Spanish subtitles on an English video, VEED's translation (or another translation tool) is the right choice.
04

How long can my video be?

Up to 30 minutes per file, and each visitor can transcribe 20 minutes of video per day. Editing, downloading files and rendering in your browser are unlimited.
05

Is my video uploaded, like it is on VEED?

No. The video stays in your browser and is rendered there. Only a small compressed audio track is sent for transcription, and we do not store it or the subtitles.
