A free subtitle generator that does the heavy lifting in your browser instead of on someone else’s server.
Captions shouldn’t cost a subscription
Most caption tools upload your whole video, render it on their servers and charge for the time. Modern browsers can encode video themselves, so Auto Captions lets yours do it. That keeps the tool free, fast for short clips and private by default.
Speech recognition runs on Whisper through Groq. Your browser extracts a small compressed audio track and sends only that; the transcript comes back with timing for every word, and everything after that happens on your device.

How we write the blog and guides
The blog and guides are written by the people who build the caption tool, so they explain captions the way we have to handle them in code: file formats, timing, line lengths and readability.
- Steps for other apps (YouTube, Zoom, iMovie, DaVinci Resolve and others) are checked against the maker’s own help pages on the date shown under each article, and we link those pages.
- We don’t publish invented statistics, testimonials or reviews. When a number appears, the source is linked next to it.
- We say what our own tool can’t do, and when another app is the better choice.
- Articles show when they were published and last updated. If you spot a mistake or an outdated menu, tell us and we’ll fix it.
